Norway is the biggest producer of hydropower in Europe, and it is still striving to increase its annual production by 12 percent through 2020. Dr. Hermod Brekke has twenty years of experience as an Engineer with Kværner/Kvaerner a Norwegian firm that works all facets of engineering and construction including shipbuilding and process technology. When he was Chief Engineer at Kværner/Kvaerner, Dr. Brekke was credited with the development of the matrix method, also called the frequency analysis, for calculation of regulation stability for hydropower plants. Hermod Brekke, Ph.D. is an engineering consultant and Professor Emeritus at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU. He was been a member of the faculty of NTNU’s Department of Energy and Process Engineering for fourteen years.

At the Hydropower laboratories at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU there has been a tradition for graphical calculations of flow on a Pelton Bucket. This tradition dates back to 1918, when Henrik Christie wrote the first diploma thesis at the Laboratory. In this thesis he introduced the method, which is based on the simple formulation that a particle on the surface always has an acceleration perpendicular to the surface. Later Hermod Brekke continued this tradition at Kvaener where Christie was his superior. Brekke modernized the method by introducing reduced quantities, which made the method more universal. This is yet an example of the considerable contribution Dr. Brekke has made to the advancement of hydropower technology. He also invented the X-Blade runner design for the Three Gorges Power Plant in China. The Norwegian University of Science & Technology is his alma mater, where he earned his Master’s of Science and his Ph.D. Dr. Brekke is a member of the Norwegian Electrotechnical Association, the Norwegian Academy of Technical Science, the International Hydropower Association, and the Rotary Club. Madison Who’s Who member, Hermod Brekke, Ph.D., can be found on the Madison Who’s Who Directory where he is looking forward to networking with you.
